The making of war movies costs millions of dollars with the sets and the special effects in them but the viewing and the number of downloads of war movies nowadays brings in far greater revenue for the industry and the producers. War has always been considered a good subject to create movies. It has action, emotion, romance and even patriotism and all the integral elements of a good film. It greatly moves the audience. Apocalypse Now (1979) by Francis Ford Coppola
Every war movie has a dramatic edge to it with a lot of emotion as well. ‘Apocalypse Now’ is just another dramatic war movie which stars Martin Sheen, Marlin Brando and Robert Duvall. Set during the time of the Vietnam War, a U.S Army Captain is sent on an official and secret mission to assassinate a Green Beret Colonel who leads his mean and the local tribe on illegal guerilla missions in the enemy territory. The movie shows how the captain endures this journey with his men. The movie is a treat to watch every step of the way with amazing work done by the director, cast and the crew.
Platoon (1986) by Oliver Stone
Another Vietnam War movie filmed in the 1980’s is ‘Platoon’. It has a strong cast of Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe who have done an outstanding job in delivering their roles. This epic movie is about a naïve boy who goes to war in Vietnam only to realize the horrors of war that he is not only waging war against the enemy but also fighting the conflict between the men within his platoon. He is close to a psychological meltdown as the other soldiers make him feel completely useless and insignificant. War has been captured in its true sense in this movie and it is a must watch.
Saving Private Ryan (1998) by Steven Spielberg
When talking about the best ever war movie to be made, he name of ‘Saving Private Ryan’ is sure to come to mind. Directed by the famous Jurassic Park creator, Steven Spielberg has outdone himself in this historical classic movie. The movie has a strong cast with Tom Hanks, Matt Damon and Tom Sizemore. This is a breathtaking film as a group of U.S soldiers, lead by Tom Hanks, to retrieve a paratrooper, Private James Francis Ryan, from behind enemy lines after the Normandy Landings. The paratrooper’s brothers have all been killed during war so all efforts are made to avoid him facing the same fate. The story brings forth the reality of broken homes and lost loved ones during the time of war.
Schindler's List (1993) by Steven Spielberg
If you’re into historical biographies then ‘Schindler’s List’ is just the thing for you. Steven Spielberg has yet again shown his magic in this true story of a Nazi Czech businessman named Oskar Schindler. He uses Jews as labor for his factory in Poland and gains profit from them. But as World War II progresses his intentions some what change and Schindler seeing the fate of the Jews, turns a sympathetic heart towards them. He saves 1100 Jews from an awful fate of death in the gas chambers. The film is a pure master piece about redemption. To download such a war movie makes one relive the past.
Full Metal Jacket (1987) by Stanley Kubrick
‘Full Metal Jacket’ is a dark comedy war film set during the time of the Vietnam War. The movie has a lot of memorable characters like Pvt. Joker, Pvt. Pyle, R. Lee Ermey and Eightball. The movie has boost camp scenes that look very much true to life and reality. Braveheart (1995) by Mel Gibson
Last but not the least when talking about war movies one can never forget the cry of freedom at the end of Mel Gibson’s ’Braveheart’. He plays the Scot out to attain freedom for his country. Mel Gibson gives one of his best performances as William Wallace, a Scottish rebel, who leads the Scottish people to unite and fight for their freedom against the British in 1298. He does all within his power and even sacrifices his life for this cause. The movie is set in the beautiful landscape of Scotland and brings back to life the history that has passed so many years ago. With a powerful message ‘Braveheart’ is simply an amazing film to watch.
Paths of Glory (1957) by Stanley Kubrick
‘Paths of Glory’ is an epic tale of World War I that was made in 1957. It stars the ever famous Kirk Douglas and Ralph Meeker. This movie is considered one of Stanley Kubrick’s masterpieces. The film shows the irony of World War I in which class matters more than national differences and the soldiers are nothing but pawns for the generals who dispose of their lives as if they were playing a game of chess. ‘Paths of Glory’ has got not one moment that has been wasted and keeps the tension going through out the entire movie. It is deemed as truly one of the best war movies.
The Great Escape (1963) by John Sturges
Based on a true story ‘The Great Escape’ is about a group of prisoners of war who are allied escape artists. They are placed within an escape proof camp. The movie belongs to a comedy action genre and people get a laugh when the prisoners try to outwit their jailers while digging an escape tunnel. The second half of the movie is nothing but adventure where the prisoners make it out of the prison but use trains and boats to make their way out of occupied Europe. It can be watched a dozen or so times and still one will not tire of it. ‘The Great Escape’ is a wonderful tribute to mankind.
Lawrence of Arabia (1962) by David Lean
‘Lawrence of Arabia’ is a war movie that every person knows by name. Direcor David Lean portrays the character of Thomas Edward Lawrence as a man who has been labeled many a names from a hero, to sadist, to charlatan. His adventures are recounted in the movie where he organizes a guerilla army and leads the Arabs. And also how he helps the British bring down the Ottoman Empire. Starring Peter O'Toole, Alec Guinness and Anthony Quinn, ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ is a war movie that is a must download and a must watch for all the movie lovers in the world.
Das Boot (1981) by Wolfgang Petersen
‘Das Boot’ is picturized in the confines of a German U-boat submarine set during the World War II. It is set in 1942 when the German fleet was engaged in destroying the English shipping. One such U-boat takes heavy losses and the movie shows how the crew maintains their professionalism as soldiers and attempts the impossible in the claustrophobic submarine atmosphere that is filled with filth and sheer terror. ‘Das Boot’ is a powerful and complete movie that depicts all aspects from heroism to hope, fear, patriotism and duty. It is a complete package that any good war movie should have.
