Plot Summary:

Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) is a 42 year old man doing office job but despises his work. His wife Carolyn (Bening) is a real estate agent and they have a 16 year old daughter Jane (Birch). Lester feels depressed all the time but becomes interested in Jane’s classmate and friend Angela Hayes (Suvari) when he sees her performing a dance in the school. He starts to have sexual fantasies and visualizes Angela nude and covered with rose petals only. Carolyn develops an affair with a business rival Buddy (Peter Gallaghar). Lester quits job and starts serving fast food in a restaurant. He begins exercising when he hears Angela saying that she would find him attractive if he improved his physique.

Lester comes to know of Carolyn’s affair but remains cool. Lester has a neighbor, a retired colonel living with his photographer son Ricky. Colonel finds nude photos of Lester exercising in Ricky’s room and admonishes Ricky as he believes Ricky is gay and having sexual relationship with Lester. Ricky is secretly having an affair with Jane and flees with her. Colonel confronts Lester who rebuffs him. Lester calls Angela who is feeling lonely and confesses his feelings. Angela tries to seduce him, but upon knowing that Angela is a virgin, Lester forgoes his sexual feelings towards Angela. They both share their frustrations and develop a mutual bond towards each other. But just as the audiences are starting to breathe a sigh of relief, Lester kills himself with a gun he stole from Colonel’s home. Ricky and Jane find Lester’s blood stained body in his bathroom.

Carolyn returns and is seen crying while the Colonel learns about his missing gun. There is a narration by Lester that tells that he found true beauty in the world and it was impossible to stay mad.
