Plot Summary:

The influence of director John Hughes is heavy in this movie. This is the first film from Richard Kelly, who not only directed the show but wrote the screenplay as well. Download Donnie Darko movie and you will feel like it is one of those John Hughes movies like Breakfast Club, or a Hughes adaptation of Gabriel Marquez novels. You pray that the movie is a success although it is pretty evident from the start that it is unlikely to.

The movie is about Donnie Darko, played by a young Jake Gyllenhaal. Donnie is a teenager suffering from schizophrenia, whose guilt over his condition is represented by a dark cloud in his eyes. His mother regards Donnie’s condition with love and bemusement. When Donnie asked his mother “How does it feel to have a son who is a wacko”, his mother just answers “It feels great”. It is this obligation to inject weightlessness to melancholy that brings the movie down. Director Kelly does not have the confidence or ability to pull over such a feat.

In the movie Kelly tries to bring comedy, social satire and science fiction into a theme based on troubled teenagers. The movie begins with crashed jet and the dropped turbine falls directly into Donnie’s room. The chaos it creates feels exactly like what Donnie would have thought off in this head.

The movie then takes a corkscrew narrative that follows Donnie through the events in this life that adds to his anguished mental state. He creates a scene every time he has any interaction with another human being. However, he has not trouble attracting the attention of his neighbour Gretchen. To her, he is better than the bunch of misfits and bullies who represents the rest of their class on high school. As he struggles through relationship with people in school and his life, Donnie is always accompanied by his imaginary rabbit and develops the power to see through time. As he uses this ability to travel to time, Donnie finally make sense of his destiny in the world. This is the explanation the director has given about Donnie’s state of mutant affliction.

Kelly wants the movie to cover more ground than it needs to by setting in 1988 against a backdrop where Donnie’s sister (played by Jake’s real life sister Maggie) tells their father that she will be voting for Michael Dukakis in the presidential election. This setting is futher elaborated through the representation of 1980’s pop icons Patrick Swayze and Drew Barrymore. Here Swayze is a motivational speaker and Barrymore a high school teacher.

Donnie Darko is a story of a wounded and tragic teenager who becomes a hero when he eventually realizes that action is what matter and character has to come forward to things to happen, albeit told in a very sophisticated twist. I would not recommend you to download Donnie Darko movie unless you are really to spend two hours of your time thinking how such a movie can be released.
