Plot Summary:
‘Fair Game’ is a biography movie belonging to the genre of drama and thriller. Directed by Doug Liman and written by Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, the movie revolves around a CIA agent whose husband is being discredited after an article he wrote about how the Bush administration justified the invasion of Iraq by manipulating the intelligence.
The movie leads up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003 by American forces. It shows the picture of the intelligence community placed in Washington in the past decade and the abuse of power by the government is also shown in it. The characters are strongly put with compelling drama. The story holds attention of the audience and covers new grounds.
A lot of controversy prevailed when George W. Bush was president and declared war in 2003 on Iraq. The reason being given behind the invasion to the Americans was that chemical weapons were being created by Saddam Hussein. Saddam would use these weapons against American cities. Soon afterwards it was understood that such weapons no longer exist or never did exist in the first place. There was confusion as to how the CIA could be so wrong. The movie unfolds in between these controversies of 2002 and 2004. The story is told by CIA agent Valerie Plame (Noami Watts) and her husband Joe Wilson (Sean Penn) who also plays the role of United Nations Ambassador.
Both husband and wife live a happy life with their two kids and are non political civilians working for the federal government. Wilson discovers false information about a deal made between Iraq and Niger regarding nuclear development and publicly criticizes the administration for this false claim. This lead to Plame losing her job and having tense relations with her husband due to all the hatred being put their way by the media and the people. The later half of the move focuses on the couple’s relationship. The movie focuses on the two characters of Plame and Wilson and revolves around how they manage to endure this stress on their relationship. The story does not stress much on the Bush administration.
‘Fair Game’ plays out well as a drama thriller with an educational meaning to it as well. The characters are acted out well and the dialogues are well written. Watching this movie, one gets to relive the past.
