The film is set in 1846 in New York City but soon takes us into 1862. Irish immigrants are led by Priest Vallon (Liam Neeson) who has a young son, Amsterdam, and Bill the Butcher, who is the leader of the natives. A bloody battle ensues and Bill kills Vallon. Amsterdam grows up in an orphanage and returns to the city 16 years later. He finds an old friend Johnny Sirocco, who takes him to Bill the Butcher. Bill now controls most of the city and celebrates the anniversary of his victory in the civil war. Amsterdam plans to kill him during the ceremony. He meets Jenny (Cameron Diaz), who is a pickpocket. Amsterdam wins the confidence of Bill with a sinister plot swelling inside. He is always on the lookout to exact revenge for the killing of his father. He waits for 16th February to get an opportunity to kill Bill. He even slips into the inner ring of mobsters who work for Bill. But to his amazement, he finds that as he gets closer to Bill and knows more about him, the more he feels cast under his spell and impressed by him. He starts playing a double role with an identity crisis. On the one hand he ostensibly behave like a surrogate son of Bill, on the other hand he remains loyal to the mission he has come to accomplish. Bill is saved by Amsterdam from an assassination attempt, and Bill starts to treat him like a son. Jenny and Amsterdam have a heated exchange over her affection for Bill but end up loving each other passionately. Jenny however, confides in Bill about the true identity of Amsterdam who beats up his friend Johnny to set as bait for Amsterdam. Amsterdam arrives and bill beats him violently with crowds cheering. Amsterdam however survives and escapes.

There are many gripping scenes that show confrontation between Bill and Amsterdam with finally Amsterdam killing Bill.
