Plot Summary:
The King's speech is based on history with a drama effect that no one can afford to miss. Written by David Seidler and directed by Emmy award winner Tom Hooper this movie has given the audience the chance to relive the story of King George VI through their own eyes. This movie depicts how King George overcomes his fears and his stammering to lead the country through tough times. Colin Firth, the star from ‘Bridget Jones's Diary' plays out the role of King George while other cast members include Geoffrey Rush and Bonham Carter.
The movie gives insight into the royal family members lives and shows the essence of friendship between two strong people.
The story is set in the mid 1930's about the ever famous King George VI of England and his accession to the throne after his brother gives up the throne. What makes this movie different from the others is that it shows the struggle of King George (Bertie) to overcome his suffering of stammering since childhood. From the age of 4 or 5, Bertie had dreaded the public speaking though he has a brilliant mind and a very temperamental man. He underwent a lot of misery on the day of the closing of the Commonwealth exhibition in 1925 when he made a speech to the audience. Bertie made continuous efforts to get rid of his stammering but to no avail. His wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) supports him at all times and plays the ever loving wife who wants her husband to gain confidence regardless of whether he becomes king or not. At last he met Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), a speech therapist. He did not have a medical degree but he had worked as a pronunciation and diction coach. His teaching the King is kept a secret affair that is known to none. He taught Bertie well and made progress through his unconventional techniques. There becomes a bond of friendship between two and soon Bertie learns to speak boldly and flawlessly. Ultimately he becomes king of England and delivers a speech to the entire nation, over the radio, declaring war on Germany in 1939.
The King's Speech is an epic movie portraying a deeply moving story with humor and power at the same time. The actors have shown their full potential in acting. The director, cast and the whole team has done a spectacular job in reinforcing this historical masterpiece. It is highly recommended to fans of drama and history.
