Plot Summary:

In the movie L.A.Confidential, you will see that corruption in the 1950’s Los Angeles, is more than just white-hot, it is a way of life in itself. As the credits start to appear, we are given the newsreel treatment, images of 1950’s Los Angeles with the background music by Johnny Mercer and the narrator describes a series of gangland murders. We find out later in the movie that the narrator is Danny Devito as the reporter.

Download L.A.Confidential movie and you will get a great adaptation of the James Ellroy novel. L.A Confidential does not waste any time pulling the rug over the eyes. It lets the audience know right from the start that California is just a poster covering up a rat’s den; a sinful paradise built on sleaze and blood. Like the classic 1974 movie Chinatown, which was set in Los Angeles as well, this rare film noir thriller understands what bad judgements can do to good thinking men. Even heroes have to get their hands dirty in order to take down the bad guys during the 1950’s.

One a cold Christmas, Police Officer Bud White, played by Russell Crowe, tan and handsome but with the eyes of a street hoodlum, stops a domestic violence call by having a go at the husband. White likes to think of himself as a guardian or women but he has rather violent ideas about gentlemanliness. Meanwhile, Det Jack Vincennes played with puckishly smoothness by Kevin Spacey receives under the table money from journalist Sid Hudgen (Devito) for providing inside information. Hudgens is the publisher of Hush Hush a gossip/scandal tabloid that features sensationalism in crime. The other main character in the movie is rookie cop Edward Exley played by Guy Pearce who wants to be a heroby going against the norm and work according to the rules.

The plot of the movie is a complicated maze of sleaze that leads from a multiple homicide in a restaurant to the activities of wealthy photographer cum pimp to the stars David Starthairn who provides a very kinky and special service; his girls have been re-modelled by Cosmetic Surgey to resemble movie stars of the day. When the inner city blacks get the blame for the murders, we see racism rearing its head even among cops.

The director Curtis Hanson who together with Brian Helgeland wrote the script, weaves a believable tale of a convoluted web of illegal activities committed by cops, politicians criminals, journalist and femme fatale: here the lady in the picture is Kim Basinger who plays a hooker made to look like Veronica Lake.

The casting of two Australian actors Crowe and Pearce work wonders for the movie. After initially hating each other’s guts, both actors eventually work together as a tag team – Crowe’s brawn and Pearce’s brain, to finally solve the case. However the one actor who truly makes the movie is Kevin Spacey with his smoothness and charisma, ideal for the setting of the movie.
