Plot Summary:

Caden Cotard works in theatre and he wants to release a new wonderful play. He doesn’t seem to be a bright person or a brilliant director. His life looks to be the most ordinary one. Adele, his wife, has left him not because of the other man but because of her dream to be a painter in Germany. She is going to take their small daughter. He goes to doctor Madeleine Gravis who can do nothing but writing book about medicine, so she cannot help him. A new light in the end of the tunnel – his new relationships – a not very successful. He has a problem inside him but he doesn’t know the reason for its display. His functions stop acting. He feels alarm as for his life fast passing. He makes up his mind to leave his native home. He wants to find a group of people to perform in New York. He wants them to start appreciating their lives, to leave their homes and to go out of town in order to enjoy their real lives. He knows that in Germany his daughter is brought up by a very doubtful person, his wife’s friend, Maria. He is not eager to build relationships with them, that is why he wants to tie himself with a new marriage with Claire. She is an actress. But two other actors – Sammy and Tammy – who are supposed to play their roles make their relationships almost unbearable. Caden does his best but it leads to no good consequences. Mixture of real and theatrical words, relationships and people confuse all the surrounding of our main hero. He doesn’t know where the truth and where the game is. As years pass, Caden turns into a person from the play he had made by himself. He tries to widen the measures he had created in his both lives – a real one and a scenical one. So when Millicent Weems – a popular actress – meets on his way he is ready to tear a line of the life he has been leading.
