In 1968, gray haired and a world weary Noodles return to the city of New York where he goes and stay with Fat Moe on his Diner. He shows Fat Moe the letter that he received from local rabbi which notifies him about the cemetery where his three friends are buried as sold for urban development. The letter provides the relatives and friends of deceased the chance to have their remains interred elsewhere.

Fat Moe tell Noodles that he has a similar letter in account of his father some eight month previously. He explains that its late delivery, coupled with the mere fact that the body of his friends has long since been removed to exclusive private cemetery. Noodles final visit was on his attendance at the Secretary Baileys party where they turn out to be Max himself.
