Plot Summary:

The homicide mystery movie, Se7en has an enticing atmosphere of morbidity and unease. Just download the Seven movie and you will know what is meant by the introductory sentence.

The movie starts with Morgan Freeman as a near retirement age detective and Brad Pitt as the one soon to take over from him. The pair wonders into a shack and find an obese corpse, face down in a bowl of spaghetti and bound to a chair with his feet. The scene reeks of rot and depravity and the audience finds out that the corpse was literally forced fed until death.

In the movie, every setting be it apartment, alleyways or library is cluttered and squalid and the streets are pictured with constant rain. The visuals convey moodiness and this is accompanied with moody aural tones as well. The director David Fincher does not tell the audience which city the movie is set in but it resembles Philadelphia in its grim and greyness. Fincher who also directed Alien 3 and Fight Club aims to keep the audience in a tight knot, sifting through the greyness for portents and clues.

In this city, a serial killer is murdering his victims according to a pattern. He commits each killing according to each of the seven deadly sins. The first one was obviously killed for gluttony. In sequence we see a lawyer murder for greed and so forth. The movie’s catch is the clever but gruesome manner in which the killer matches each sin to the killings. Since the killer is obviously very intelligent, he plays with the cops, leaving remnants for the cops to pick up. One scene was particular clever but ghoulish, a corpse literally starts to cough leaving the cops and audience with a fitful fright. The killer is shown to have a literary mind as well. Inspired by Shakespeare, Dante and others he creates a fantasy from the minds of humans, the world must be rebuke because everyone sins.

Se7en is a psychological horror thriller, the kind where people will pay for an entertaining and cathartic creep feast. Fincher has learnt a lot from his days with Manhunter and reveals just enough information in the scenes for the audience to re-create details with their own imagination. Balancing out the horror is Pitt and Freeman who provides a good balance in the young cop old cop routine. Freeman plays out his usual style in hush tones making you almost want to lean closer to the screen just to hear him clearly. On the other hand, Pitt exudes charisma and acts surprisingly to provide much of the comic relief in the movie.

Eventually towards the conclusion of the movie, we meet the killer played by Kevin Spacey whose plan is even fancier we could ever think of. Spacey plays the role with much playfulness. His killer is smooth to the point of creepiness which adds to the atmosphere of the movie. The final scenes embody the movie’s nastiest and greatest stroke.
