Plot Summary:

The movie The Sorcerer's Apprentice starts with a tale from 700 AD when Merlin had three apprentices: Balthazar, Horvath and Veronica. Horvath betrayed Merlin and joined Morgana who wished to learn the spell to bring the dead to life. Once Merlin is killed, Veronica tries to absorb Morgana's spirit to destroy her. Horvath traps both of them in a nesting doll called grimhold. With his dying breath, Merlin gives Balthazar a metal dragon which will help him find the Prime Merlinian – Merlin's successor. Balthazar searches for a long time, but cannot find him.

In 2000, a kid by the name Dave Stutler enters his antique shop chasing a letter he sent to his beloved Becky. Upon the sorcerer's invitation he takes the metal dragon into his hands which transforms into a ring. When Balthazar goes to bring the book of spells, Dave touches the grimhold causing the release of Horvath. Balthazar imprisons his spirit and Horvath's into an urn for 10 years.

In 2010, Dave is a famous Physics genius. He still holds the ring. Horvath comes to claim the grimhold.
Angered by Dave's resistance, he send wolves to kill him. Balthazar helps him once again.

Dave tries to learn sorcery from Balthazar, but isn't very skilled. One day he announces that he quits.

In the meantime, Horvath steals the grimhold from the physics lab where Dave had it stored. He releases Morgana from it. Balthazar tries to absorb her, but Morgana's spirit form cannot be bound. Dave fights her using the magic spells he learned. He defeats her and brings Balthazar back to life.

Becky confesses she liked Dave too since they were little. The young apprentice invites her on a trip to Paris on a metal eagle created through magic. He warns her though that he doesn't know how to land the eagle.
