If you are moved by emotions, this French Australian co-production is bound to move you to tears as it depicts the travails of a family grief struck by the loss of its head through heart attack. The Tree is directed by Julie Bertucelli and written by Judy Pascoe and Julie herself. The film got a seven minute standing ovation when it was premiered in Cannes Film Festival last year. Belongign to the genres of drama and romance, the film conveys a strong social message to the audiences.

Dawn (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and Peter O’Neil (Aden Young) are a couple living happily with their three sons and a small girl in the Australian countryside until tragedy strikes in the form of a fatal accident involving Peter. His car crashes in a large fig tree standing just outside the house and he suffers a fatal heart attack. Dawn is now alone with her four children trying to fend for the grief stricken family. Simone, who is the daughter does not accept the reality and feels that his father is still there in the fig tree, talking to her with the leaves of the giant tree. She even convinces her mother Dawn that Peter is indeed alive and the two of them develop a strange relationship with the tree. But the tree’s roots are growing and threaten the existence of their house. Sensing trouble, Dawn asks George, a plumber, to get the tree removed. She even starts a relationship with George, which is resented by Simone. When George comes along with other workers to remove the tree, Simone climbs up the tree and refuse to let them cut it as she believes her father is inside the tree. George curtly asks Dawn to ask Simone to come down which hurts Dawn and she asks George to leave and never come back.

The Tree has the power to move the audiences and is indeed a very intense film.
