Plot Summary:

Written and directed by Debra Granik, “Winter’s Bone” is a family drama that has been adapted on the novel by the same name written by Daniel Woodrell. It tells the story of a poor but brave girl, who fights all odds to emerge victorious in her quest to save her poor family from financial ruins.

Seventeen year old, Ree Dolly lives with her mentally challenged mother and her tow siblings, 12 year old Sonny and 6 year old Ashlee. With her father Jessup Dolly absent from home, young Ree somehow manages to take care of the family, often with the help of a kind neighbor Sonya. Jessup is absconding from home because of his links with the mafia and drug cartel, and the local sheriff informs Ree that her father had pledged the home the poor family lives in as a security for his bail in a case. The hearing of the case is due in a week, and if Jessup does not turn up, the home of the poor family will be forfeited. No one knows where Jessup is, and when Ree tries to find his whereabouts, she hears a lot of rumors about him.

People say that Jessup is long dead, and when Ree questions, she is told not to poke her nose in other people’s business. Her father’s brother, Teardrop, whom Ree is afraid of, tells Ree that Jessup is killed, but Ree does not believe him and continues her struggle to find her absconding father. She knows that people involved with her father know a lot more than they are willing to tell, and she cannot stop in her quest as a dead father with body is of no help to the poor family. She marches on in her quest until the truth is revealed to her.
